Domestic abuse can affect anyone – regardless of age. At SWSDAS, we understand that older people may face unique challenges when it comes to recognising abuse and accessing support. You may have lived with the abuse for a long time, or it may be something that’s only begun more recently. Either way, you deserve to feel safe, respected and supported.
What does abuse look like in later life?
Abuse can be:
-
Emotional or psychological – being belittled, controlled, or isolated
-
Physical – being hurt or threatened
-
Sexual – unwanted or non-consensual contact
-
Economic– having your money or property taken or controlled
-
Neglect – not having your basic needs met
-
Coercive control – long-term manipulation, fear or dependency
Sometimes the person causing harm may be your partner, your adult child, or even a carer. This can make the situation feel especially complicated or painful — but we are here to help you find a way forward, at your pace. You can learn more about domestic abuse here.

Why is it sometimes harder for older people to reach out?
We know that:
-
You may have grown up in a time when domestic abuse wasn’t spoken about
-
You may have normalised the abuse or felt ashamed to talk about it
-
You might feel guilty or scared, especially if the abuser is a family member or carer
-
Physical or mental health needs can make it harder to get help or leave
-
You may worry about finances, housing, or being believed
At SWSDAS, we offer non-judgemental, confidential support that takes your individual needs into account. Whether you want someone to talk to, to make a safety plan, or support taking legal steps — we can help.
